Anoka County Parks Receives $300,000 Gift

The Anoka County Parks and Recreation Department has received a $300,000 gift from the estate of Edith P. Wargo. The funds will be used to maintain and make improvements to the Wargo Nature Center in Lino Lakes. The nature center was named for the late Joseph E. Wargo, who was Edith’s husband and a former Anoka County judge. The Wargos provided financial support to build the nature center in 1993. The Anoka County board presented Wargo family representatives with a special plaque in appreciation for the generous gift at the January 22 board meeting.

“This is one of the largest single gifts ever received by Anoka County,” said Anoka County Commissioner Dick Lang, who chairs the county’s Parks Committee. “Joseph and Edith Wargo were committed to promoting positive environmental values and giving people the opportunity to observe wildlife and learn more about the natural world.”

Edith P. Wargo died November 30, 2006, at age 92. She was a 1938 graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School and worked as an executive for Minneapolis-based Powers department store. Her generous gift to Anoka County will be recognized at a special ceremony on Earth Day, April 19, at the Wargo Nature Center.
