Winter Activities at Anoka County Parks
Looking for a
way to chase away the winter blues? Get
outdoors and enjoy one of the many programs offered by the Anoka
County Parks and Recreation Department.

Learn to Cross
Country Ski
Cross country
skiing is a lifelong activity and is appropriate for people of all
ages and abilities. The
activity fee includes ski rental, instruction, and cross country
skiing through one of Anoka County’s beautiful parks.
No experience necessary.
Pre-registration
required by calling 651- 429-8007.
Fee: $8/Adults and
$6/Children. Time offered:
Saturday, February 16; 2
-3:30 p.m. at Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park in Coon Rapids.
Bird Walk
Join us as an
experienced birder leads you through Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park
in Coon Rapids with the opportunity to see and/or hear 20-50
different species of birds. A
checklist of Minnesota birds and a map of each area will be
provided. People of all ages
and birding ability are welcome. For
more information, call 763-757-4700. Fee:
$3/person.

a.m. at Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park in Coon Rapids.
Snowshoe Trekking
Learn how easy
it is to snowshoe! Coon
Rapids Dam Regional Park is a great place to snowshoe and experience
a variety of winter wildlife and beautiful habitat.
Snowshoers of all ages and
ability are welcome. If
there is not enough snow, we will go for a wildlife hike.
Call 651-429-8007 for more
information. Fee: $4/ person.
Time offered: Saturday,
February 16; 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park
in Coon Rapids.
Women’s Tracking
and Snowshoeing Class
Join us for
tracking instruction before heading out on snowshoes to explore the
habitat and wildlife of beautiful Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional
Park Reserve in Lino Lakes. We’ll
look for signs of otter, red fox, deer, mink, and all of our
feathered friends wintering here before warming up at the Wargo
Nature Center around a fire. This
program is held in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources (DNR) Becoming an Outdoors Woman program.
Pre-registration
and payment required through the DNR at 651-296-6157.
Fee: $15/person (Note:
Class is limited to 12 participants).
Time offered: Sunday, February 17; 1 - 4 p.m. at the Wargo
Nature Center in Lino Lakes.
Bear-y Fun -
Nymphs and Nuthatches
What are bears
up to in February? Join
us as we learn some bear-y interesting facts and make a fun craft to
take home. This program is
geared for preschool children ages 4 - 5 years old.
Pre-registration required by calling 651-429-8007.
Fee: $3/child.
Time offered: Wednesday,
February 20; 9:30-11 a.m. at Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park in Coon
Rapids or Wednesday, February 20; 1-2:30 p.m. at the Wargo Nature
Center in Lino Lakes.
Searching for the
Stars
Join us the
third Thursday of each month for this new family astronomy series to
learn about the night sky in all its splendor!
We’ll learn about telescopes
and how they help us see the stars, planets, dark sky objects, and
the sun and moon. There’ll be
plenty of hands-on activities and time outside.
(Class takes place regardless
of weather). Class is
appropriate for ages 6 and older accompanied by an adult.

Fee: $3/person or
$7/family of four. Time
offered: Thursday, February 21; 6:30 - 8 p.m. at the Wargo Nature
Center in Lino Lakes.
Ski by the Light
of the Moon
Enjoy skiing
the beautiful trails at Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park
Reserve in
Lino
Lakes
under a bright full moon. After
skiing, we’ll gather for dinner around the fireplace.
This event is open to skiers
of all ages and abilities. A
limited number of ski equipment is available for rental.
Pre-registration is

Fee: $7/adult and $5/child. Time
offered: Friday, February 22; 6 – 9 p.m. at the Chomonix Golf Course
ski area in Lino Lakes.
Tracks, Trails,
and Puppy Dog Tails
We’ll strap on
a pair of snowshoes and go for a winter trek!
Rum River North County Park
in St. Francis is a great place to snowshoe because it has a variety
of winter wildlife, beautiful habitat, and an accessible location.
We’ll learn how to make casts of animal tracks or your pet’s
paw print for a lasting memory. Hot
chocolate and snacks will refuel you for exploring on your own
afterward. People of all
ages are welcome. No
snow? We’ll still take a
nature hike. Snowshoes,
cast-making materials, and snacks will be provided.

Fee: $5/person or $12/family of four.

Saturday, February 23: 1 - 3
p.m. Rum River North County Park in St. Francis.
Meet in the shelter building.
Winter Survival
Skills
Learn how to
make a fire, build a shelter, and think positively if you are lost
or stranded in the woods. We’ll
also make a personal survival kit. Class
will take place regardless of weather so dress appropriately.
The class is suitable for
ages six and older. Pre-registration
required by calling 651-429-8007.
Fee: $3/person
or $7/family of four. Time
offered: Saturday, February 23; 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. at the Wargo Nature
Center in Lino Lakes.
