More Than $10,000 in Prizes for the 2008 Carp Fest Fishing Contest
Anglers
will vie for more than $10,000 in prizes at the 18th annual Carp
Fest fishing contest held Saturday, June 7, at the Coon Rapids Dam
Regional Park in Coon Rapids. Hosted by the Anoka County Parks and
Recreation Department, the annual event gives fishing enthusiasts of
all ages the opportunity to land the wily carp, a fish so strong it
can survive a dive over the Coon Rapids Dam.
First
prize for adults, provided in partnership with Crystal Pierz Marine,
is a 1994 16-foot Lund Rebel DLX with a 40-HP Mercury two stroke
motor, trolling motor, depth finder, and Shorelander trailer. The
child bringing in the heaviest carp will be awarded a BMX bicycle
from Jerry’s Schwinn of Coon Rapids.
One of the most popular prizes, which goes to the adult with the
second heaviest fish, is the Carp Mobile, a vehicle adorned with a
large carp emblem. This year’s Carp Mobile, provided courtesy of
Carlson Toyota and LeRoy’s Customs, both of Coon Rapids, is a 1985
Dodge Dakota pickup. It will be on display at the Coon Rapids Dam
Regional Park in the week leading up to the contest.
“It’s great to see the Carp Mobile driving around town year after
year,” said Commissioner Dick Lang, chair of the Anoka County Parks
and Recreation Committee. “Not only does it show how proud people
are to win, but it is great advertising for the contest!”
Other prizes are awarded to the top five lightest and heaviest
carp for both adults and youth age 15 and under. The prizes include
a canoeing package, courtesy of Sportsman’s Warehouse; hotel stays
from LivINN Suites in Fridley; passes for Bunker Beach Water Park;
and fishing equipment and camping gear. New this year, prizes will
be awarded at random to the 1st, 25th, 50th, 75th, 100th, and 125th
fish weighed during the contest.
As part of this year’s contest, the Anoka County Parks and
Recreation Department is inviting the public to help name the new
Carp Fest mascot. The winner will receive a family four-pack to
Bunker Beach Water Park. More information and a registration form
for the “Name the Carp” contest can be downloaded at
www.anokacountyparks.com.
Sign up now for the adult and kids’ fishing contest and you will
