Two members of the Minnesota Lynx, the local Women’s National
Basketball Association (WNBA) team, visited the Crooked Lake
Branch Library recently as part of a national campaign to help
young people develop a love for reading and encourage adults to
regularly read to children.
Nicky Anosike, a 6’ 3” center, and Charde Houston, a 6’
forward, read a story aloud and fielded questions from the young
audience as part of the “Read to Achieve” program sponsored by
the WNBA and NBA. The Lynx organization also gave away prizes
and held a drawing for a basketball autographed by Lynx players.
“‘Read to Achieve’ is a very successful outreach initiative
that promotes literacy for children of all ages,” said Anoka
County Commissioner Dan Erhart. “Youngsters respond with a
great deal of enthusiasm when professional athletes like these
Lynx players lead by example and demonstrate how important
reading is to success in school and in later life.”
Children and teens who participated in the Anoka County
Library’s summer reading program are eligible to receive a
complimentary ticket to either the August 30 or September 12
Lynx game. Both games are at 7 p.m. at Target Center in
Minneapolis. Go to
www.anoka.lib.mn.us or call 763-785-3695 for more
information.
