Nutrition & Physical Activity
Anoka County Goals:
- Create an environment where all children can grow up physically
and emotionally healthy
- Educate families on how to live a healthier lifestyle by
promoting physical activity and good nutrition
- Prevent overweight and obesity by helping families achieve and
maintain energy balance (calories consumed vs. calories expended) at
a healthy weight.
Through the Partnership for Better Health Coalition, Anoka County
supports organizations in their overweight and obesity prevention efforts
by providing resources and training on healthy nutrition and physical
activity “best practices.”
Partnership focus areas:
- Schools
- Media
- Parks & Recreation
- Healthcare
Improving nutrition and physical activity can work for everyone!
Try these tips:
- Increase eating fruits and vegetables every day. Try adding
fruits to cereal and having veggie sticks as a snack.
- Decrease intake of sweetened beverages (pop, sports drinks, and
other sweetened beverages)
- Increase daily physical activity – try walking, biking, doing
daily chores, playing games like tag, etc.
- Decrease screen time (TV, computers, video games, etc.) –
studies show that physical activity increases and nutrition improves
with less screen time.
- Get adequate rest (9 hours for children, 7-8 hours for adults).
You will you be more rested for exercise, and research shows your
nutrition improves too!
- Increase family “meal time” – try to eat together at the table
with the TV off more often. Not only can this improve nutrition, but
you’ll learn more about your kids too!
- Breastfeed for the first year of life (unless medically not
recommended). Research shows there is no better food for baby’s
first year.
