Recycling Opportunities

Each Anoka County municipality is responsible for its own recycling program with all offering curbside collection. The table below provides recycling opportunities for each municipality. Included are drop-off center recycling options, spring and/or fall recycling events and contact information for municipal recycling coordinators as well as how your recyclables should be prepared for collection recycling day. Links are provided to communities with their own web sites (underlined). Most drop-off centers will accept recyclables from any Anoka County resident.

A number of municipalities in Anoka County also host seasonal or monthly recycling drop-off days for special materials, such as appliances, clothing, electronics, fluorescent lights, household goods, etc. Call your city or township for specific information.

Garbage Disposal

Residents in a municipality with a population of 1,000 or more must have garbage service or manage their waste in an environmentally sound manner. Burning or burying garbage on your property is illegal and harmful to people and the environment. To obtain garbage collection at your home, call your city / town hall or Anoka County Environmental Services, (763) 422-7063, for a list of licensed garbage hauling companies. You may also haul garbage yourself to the sites listed below.

Call for hours, fees and acceptable materials:

  • Elk River Landfill, 22460 Hwy 169 NW, Elk River
    (763) 441-2464
  • Elk River Resource Recovery Facility - 10700 165th Ave NW, Elk River
    (763) 441-3800
  • Waste Management/Re-Cy-Co Transfer Station - 1691 91st Ave NE, Blaine
    (763) 784-4772

Resource Recovery

The Anoka County Integrated Waste Management system includes resource recovery.  Waste that cannot be recycled is made into fuel to generate electricity.  Ask your hauler where your waste goes.

The majority of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated in Anoka County is processed into refuse derived fuel (RDF) at the Elk River Resource Recovery Facility. RDF is burned at power plants to generate enough electricity to supply about 30,000 homes per day.

For more information about resource recovery call Anoka County Integrated Waste Management at (763) 323-5730 or send an e-mail recycle@co.anoka.mn.us

Landfills

There are no municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills currently operating in Anoka County. However, there are two transfer stations which will transfer your waste.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is actively involved in regulating Minnesota's landfills. In addition to permitting landfills, MPCA has programs for cleaning up and closing Minnesota landfills. Visit their web site for information about the Landfill Cleanup Program.
